The Epic Lounge - Galleries, Painting and Modelling, Tips and Tricks for 6mm Wargames Miniatures

Workbench

Welcome to the workbench. Here you'll find various odd things brewing in my mind ranging from concept sketches over half finished models to completed stuff which hasn't been added to the Lounge yet.

Epic Scale Defiler

Here's an Epic scale Defiler I'm working on. The main body is made from a Rhino reduced to about 1/4 size. The legs are from the plastic Space Marine Dreadnought.
The big problem when building a Defiler is really the main claws. I've seen a number of solutions to the problem and none are really great (Even Audrey's excellent Defiler - Getting those Man'O'War claws is impossible)
In the end I decided to build them myself from sheet of plastistruct. They're still not great but they'll do for now. I originally wanted to build a totan of 6 Defilers but because of the ammount of work involved and the number of plastic Dreadnoughts used for the legs I've given up on that plan.
I did consider casting some of the scratch built components to make things easier but casting such small pieces is pretty difficult.

In the end I'm just not sure if it'll be worth the hassle since Fanatic will probably release their own version sometime late 2006 if everything goes according to plan.

Decimator

The Decimator is a new type Super Heavy Tank for the Chaos armies. I've seen various versions done: Some based on the Forge World Stormsword and others based on two mk1 Land Raiders stuck together. For my own version I thought I'd go for a WW1 style mk1 tank look which I believe was Jervis' first idea when he released the first version of the Chaos army list.
L ater on the concept was changed so the background for the tank was an early percursor of the Shadowsword.

The tank is basically four mk1 Land Raiders glued togetherwith a few spikey bitz added. Nothing spectacular but I think it looks allright.

Feral Ork Madboy Airship

This was an odd idea I got when looking at Forge World's fantastic Dwarf Airship for Warmaster. I really liked the concept and thought it would fit nicely with the rag tag feel of the Feral Ork Army. However since I was low on cash and couldn't bring it on myself to chop up Forge World's beautiful model I set about constructing my own version. A detailed buide to how it was made can be found in Incoming! issue 20 but a quick recap:

First the rough shape of the airship was cut from a block of polystyrene. Then I covered the thing in PVA glue to give the future layers something to stick to. Then I sculpted the balloon from Green Stuff and added wires and crew compartment. One of the great lesons from this model was that I discovered a way to do riveted armor plating which is perfect for Ork war machines.

New Capitol Imperialis

While the Capitol Imperialis is a great model I thought I'd try my hand and do an updated version with a more "gothic" feel.

The final model will be even bigger than the original CI -that's 15 cm of pure Imperial goodness! It is the plan that this model should work as a combined Leviathan/ Capitol Imperialis.

The "Irenaeus"

For BFG I'm working on this massive Fleet Carrier. I still need to add some kind of blast shields and finish the rear section of the ship but apart from that this is pretty much how the finished ship will look.

Rules wise I plan to use the regular rules for the Nemesis fleet carrier. The extra launch bays is believed to house repair facilities and reserve parts for the main complement of Attack Craft.

BFG Planets

Here's a quick selection of various planets I've been building for BFG.
Two main techniques were used to make these:

The first and most simple is simply to cover the polystyrene balls with sand, paint them black and drybrush the desired colour. This can be varied by cutting lava pits and craters into the surface while the glue is still wet.

The second option replaces the sand with flour (yes flour!) This produces a smoother finish which is great for airbrushing. Airbrushing is a great way to do "earth" like planets, suns and gas planets.
